Flora and Fauna

FLORA & FAUNA

Manipur is blessed with amazing varieties of flora and fauna, 67% of the geographical area is hill tract covered with forests that sustain a host of rare and endemic plant and animal life. In Manipur, orchids are abounding in their natural habitat growing on soil or on trees and shrubs showing their exotic colours and shapes. There are more than 500 varieties of orchids which grow in Manipur of which 472 have been identified.

'Siroi Lily' is the only terrestrial lily grown on the top of Siroi hill, near Ukhrul town.  Salamander known as 'Lengwa' is found at the foothill of Siroi in Ukhrul. The Sloe Loris, the Clauded Leopard, Hoolock Gibbon, Burmese Pea-Fowl, the Spotted Linshang, different species of Hornbills etc. form a part of the rich natural fauna of Manipur.

The most unique fauna found in Manipur is the Sangai, the dancing deer (brow-antlered deer). The floating mass of vegetation on the Loktak Lake, called Cervid (known as Phumdi in local dialect) sustains small herds of this endemic deer.
